One thousand days of the Ukraine-Russia war, when will it end?

Today, Tuesday, marks the completion of one thousand days since the Russia-Ukraine war began. However, there are still no signs of the conflict coming to an end, with fighting continuing on multiple fronts.

The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, continues to face regular drone and missile attacks. In the midst of this, U.S. President Joe Biden has authorized Ukraine to launch American rocket strikes inside Russia, ahead of Donald Trump's expected return to the White House in January. Russia has warned that any such attacks will be met with a strong and appropriate response.

With Trump's potential return to power in the U.S., questions have arisen about what stance he will take regarding the war. Specifically, there are concerns about whether the U.S. will continue its policy of providing military aid to Ukraine and what will become of the united front against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Since the war began, there have been no direct talks between Ukraine and Russia. Both countries are likely to focus on strengthening their positions before engaging in any potential negotiations. Ukraine and Russia may aim to secure more territory in the conflict before agreeing to peace talks.

Russia has received drones from Iran, and North Korea has deployed approximately 11,000 soldiers to the battlefield in Kursk. A senior Ukrainian official has indicated that North Korea has the capacity to send up to 100,000 troops.

Ukraine, for its part, has controlled a part of Russia’s Kursk region since August, deploying its most capable troops there. Ukraine claims that Russia has sent 50,000 soldiers to counter this. Additionally, Ukraine is looking to capture more territory in eastern Ukraine.

As winter approaches, the situation has become more intense. Recently, Russia launched a major attack, firing 120 missiles and 90 drones in a single day. In this context, the authorization of U.S. rocket strikes inside Russian territory and continued U.S. military and financial support to Ukraine have become crucial.

Over the past two years, Ukraine's economy has seen moderate growth, though it has suffered a major setback compared to pre-war conditions, especially in the steel and agricultural sectors.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he will make every effort to bring the war to an end through diplomatic negotiations next year. However, he insists that any talks must be preceded by a ceasefire and the guarantee of Ukraine's security.

The Kremlin has made it clear that, as of June, President Putin demanded that Ukraine abandon its aspirations to join NATO and withdraw its forces from four regions. However, Ukraine has firmly rejected this proposal.

Last Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke with Putin on the phone for the first time in nearly two years. Following this, Zelensky remarked that Putin had been isolated, but this conversation helped ease some of his isolation. Zelensky has cautioned that genuine peace is needed. But after one thousand days of conflict, the question remains: how will that peace come about?

However, if Trump returns to the White House, he may alter U.S. policy. Military experts suggest that a change in policy alone would not drastically alter the course of a war that has now lasted 33 months.

The war has claimed thousands of lives in Ukraine, and millions of people have sought refuge abroad. It is the largest conflict in Europe since World War II. The extent of military losses on both sides has been kept secret, and Western intelligence estimates vary widely between the two countries. However, all reports indicate significant losses on both sides, with many lives lost and widespread destruction.
